Rough and ready!

Bass station Rough Tempo Radio announces February guest list

Cast your mind back to the mid-nineties – before the internet allowed absolutely anyone to broadcast, transmit and route radio shows through a durable little wire known as an ethernet cable (without breaking the law) – the UK was centre of the pirate radio universe. Stations with names like Obscene, Rewind, Konflict (did we mention Rinse?) were ten-a-penny, blasting jumped up bass-heavy sounds through analogue transistors pretty much 24/7.

These days, they are much less prevalent. However, located in a hidden corner of Essex is an online station proffering the same hard-edged ethos as the original pirate stations. Known as Rough Tempo Radio (RTR), it's absolutely legal, comes with the interactive mod-cons of a social network community and has a consistently massive soundtrack.

Conceived and hand-built by TQ Scoundrel, RTR these days occupies a unit off a quiet backstreet in Essex, its no-frills web interface – its busy chatroom, ferocious audio stream and HD webcam broadcast – looking and feeling exactly as it is; a DIY station made by a bass head dedicated to clandestine radio.

Attracting top-notch guests on a regular basis alongside the steady stream of locals that use the site to promote their parties, spin new material or, in some cases, just get out the house, RTR has welcomed the likes of Rack N Ruin, Modestep and The Rat Pack in recent months.
