Cyantific Interview & Guest Mix

South West London based DJ and producer Cyantific aka Jon Stanley has kicked started 2012 with a string of high pressure releases including one on his own label, also he's got his very own podcast and has done remixes for the likes of Scissor Sisters and Emeli Sandé. We get to catch up with the man and have a chat!

1. Hi Jon, how has 2012 treated you so far?

"Excellently thanks. It's busier than ever, but it's really enjoyable."

2. Last month saw the release of your latest 12" 'Mirador & Defect' which you put out on your own label. Both have had huge support from some of the leading DJ's in Drum & Bass, how do you feel about the success of the latest release?

"It's gone really well! It's always a big honour to have people like Andy C, Hype and Friction playing your tracks. It's still a buzz! And to hear my stuff on the radio still freaks me out."

3. Speaking about your own label also named 'Cyantific Music' which was set up last year, how have you found the experience? Has it been daunting?

"Stepping out on your own is never easy. I've enjoyed the support of Hospital Records for years - they have always been a great place to be, but it was time to move on and do things in my own way. Being able to do releases for Ram and Critical in the last year has been beneficial too."

4. Late last year saw your remix of Emeli Sande's track 'Daddy' released and you now have a remix of the Scissor Sister's 'Only the Horse's' coming out, How did they go down? Do you have any more remixes in the works?

"The Daddy remix went well, it got playlisted on 1xtra and everything! That was a big thing for me. The Scissor Sister's one is just out now, it's been getting a decent response. I did that one with Dimension - he's a new guy, making some amazing tunes at the moment. I've got a couple of other things in the works, but more working on original stuff."

5. You are known for putting together a good set when it comes to DJ'ing, and the guest mix you provided for us just continues to cement that fact. What do you think is important to keep your sets sounding fresh and innovative?

"Why thank you. It's interesting times in dance music. There's more freedom than ever to really play across the board, I'm not sure why, just seems like a generational thing. I think it's great! I'm getting to play all sorts of stuff, old and new, that I would've just enjoyed in the studio before. As far as keeping it fresh and innovative - I don't know...I try not to over think it and just play what I like, and trust my instincts when I listen to new stuff. I never ever play music I don't like."

6. 'Cyantific Radio' is your new podcast which started earlier this year, the podcast has now reached episode 4, tell us what it's all about?

"It's kind of an extension of expanding the label, and also being a way of showing people what I'm about as a DJ selection-wise. I don't want to be typecast as being this or that, or associated with camp A or camp B. It's also a platform for me to talk rubbish into a microphone once a month."

7. Do you currently have any plans for an album in the works?

"Yes, it's well overdue. I've got a lot of music in various states of finishedness. I'm going to be sitting indoors a lot over summer working towards getting it done. It's gonna be very different!"

8. Over the last 12 months or so D&B and Bass music has made quite an impact on the charts, more so than ever before. Do you think it's a good thing or should it remain relatively underground?

"It's a fantastic thing, why not? For every few people who just dip into it, there will be one person who wants to know more and goes in on discovering the more underground side of it all. That is always going to be a great thing for the music in the long term. I mean if I hadn't heard The Prodigy's music that charted I might not be into DnB. I'm sure people had the same discussions back then also."

9. Outside of Drum & Bass what are you currently listening to?

"I'm loving the stuff Hudson Mohawke, Rustie and the Lucky Me lot are doing. Also the Dirtybird stuff, Fool's Gold, T Williams, Baxta is making some great tunes, Akira Kiteshi...all sorts!"

10. What does the rest of this year hold for you?

"A lot of work on the label. Some real big projects with that. I've taken on a label manager to run it properly, so expect to be bombarded with T shirts, mugs, lighters and capes soon. Working solidly in the studio on this album too."
