Clouded Rainbow

Clouded Vision definitely doesn't refer to the clear path Matt Walsh has trodden in his rise up the quality electronic music rankings. Growing up in Clacton-On-Sea in Essex, he remembers hearing The Prodigy's 'Experience' album at an early age “and everyone drawing happy faces on their homework books. I had to find out what this was all about, and it started there.”

He became a bit of an indie kid, and says he still follows guitar music to this day — name-checking Peaking Lights, Toy, Group Rhoda and Savages – although it was electroclash in the early noughties that really got him sold on dance music. He soon scored DJ residencies in his new hometown of Colchester in Essex before moving to London and landing a residency at T-Bar in east London.

There he was spotted by Canadian electro darling Tiga, who recognised him as a kindred spirit. “I’m not sure if it was due to the music I play and make, or the fact we look very similar and are both football fanatics!” he laughs.

Swiftly signing to Tiga's Turbo Recordings, he started producing disco-tech with production partner Steve Cook under the name Clouded Vision. As well as Turbo material, he released some solo Matt Walsh tracks on Wax:On and Seinan Music and picked up a slew of remixes.

In 2010 he started the Clouded Vision label and began to get a lot of unsigned tracks sent to him from all over the world. “By the time Clouded 006 was unleashed, I could have released 007-020 in a matter of months,” he tells DJ Mag, “but instead I started to collate the tracks as a compilation.”

This 'Clouded Vision Experiment' comp now showcases the wealth of talent on his label. Moving through house, techno, electro and disco, the comp's exclusive 20 tracks includes the hypnotic 'Truckin' by Darabi (below), electro from My Favorite Robot and Remain, and Daniel Avery (who he's been hosting nights with in east London) and the Deadstock 33s. “It’s a great way to give the label and all of the artists a push, as well as getting my own mixed CD of tracks out there,” says Matt.

All good, but just before we go we ask the deep electro-tech man who his favourite other person called Walsh is – Louis? Bradley? “Without a doubt the ex-Tottenham player Paul Walsh, that guy had hair to be proud of.”
