As far back as the early '90s, Goa has offered a retreat for travellers of Asia looking for an injection of noise into what would otherwise be a peaceful escape. It's also proved a popular outlet for the population of locals willing to savour the free-flowing abandonment of an all-out rave on the white, sandy shores of a beach in genuine paradise.
Frequently written off as a stomping ground for freaky ravers spinning poi in tie-die sarongs to mind-mangling trance, this Indian state has undergone a period of change over recent years, as the cyber age has taken its toll, bringing the international dance music community together, by enhancing access to electronic music to increasingly extreme levels. These days dance music is no longer an under-discovered import to the people of India. DJ Mag India is now up and running and nation is very much cultivating a scene of its own.
Sunburn Festival – now in its sixth year – is a fine testament to all this. Proffering the biggest names in trance music alongside homegrown talent, some underground treasures and even picks from the obscurer ranks of global bass music, it's leading the “EDM” charge, still pushing the Asian dance scene forward.
Located on stunning, tropical coastal climes, Sunburn's sound and production standards reached international acclaim at the turn of the century, and this year will be no exception...
