REWIND: STACEY PULLEN

'Any Which Way' man spins back

First record you ever bought?

“An album by Ramsey Lewis called 'Love Notes'. Has a collaboration with Stevie Wonder called 'Spring High'. Amazing.”

First-ever gig?

“[My] first gig was in May '85 at my high school. I was 16, a sophomore in high school, and [had] my first alcoholic drink, which was Colt 45 and ghettofied malt liquor. Lifting speakers and DJ equipment when you've been drinking for the first time is no joke.”

Fondest club experience?

“Playing a nine-hour set at HiFi Bar in Melbourne, Australia, and the promoter arranged for sushi and sake as a way to curb my hunger pains. It gave me the energy to continue on.”

Worst club experience?

“My very first professional gig, way back in 1993. It was after trains, planes and automobiles were cancelled, and I showed up to my gig with only my backpack and the clothes on my back, because the airline lost my records on the way from Amsterdam to Basel.”

Most mental event?

“Most mental gig was 1994 in Arica, Chile with Derrick May. There was a total eclipse, and there were astronomers from all over the world to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. It took us five hours to drive to our destination through the Andes Mountains.”

Most significant club of all-time?

“The most significant club was, by far, The Music Institute in Detroit from 1987-1989, the first techno club where all the groundbreaking Detroit techno was tried and tested.”

Any era, anywhere?

“I would've loved to be in Detroit in the late '50s to mid-'60s, because it would be interesting to see how Detroit was before the riots and during the beginning of the Motown music era.”
