ASYLUM DJS ON THEIR CRAZIEST MEMORIES

Ahead of the final Asylum at Mint Warehouse.

All good things must come to an end. In danceland, it's a particularly crushing truth. We've all been lost in a club, taking a cursory glance at the Casio to realise that there's only five minutes left until the lights come up, the sound goes off and you are herded like gurning lamas towards the exit. For many of us, this is a weekly occurrence.

Mint Club's long-running Asylum night — run by Tom Thorpe, one half of PBR Streetgang — will shut its doors for the last time on Saturday 26th October after pushing the late license to its absolute limit (again).

And while it's a closing party to mark a legacy that has seen the likes of Dixon, Omar S and Theo Parrish come regularly to Leeds' finest clubs — The Garage, Mint Club, Stinky's Peephouse, Victoria Works, The Faversham, Stylus — over the years, it's also going to be the night's 10th birthday, so it's a double whammy.

Named Asylum obvious reasons, this one is going to be especially mental, considering that the line-up will include Kerri Chandler, Crazy P, Maurice Fulton, PBR Streetgang, Maxxi Soundsystem, Futureboogie DJs and Negghead all at the club's larger sibling, Mint Warehouse. Talk about leaving on a high!

WE ASKED THE DJS TO TELL US ABOUT THEIR MOST MENTAL MOMENT AT THE ASYLUM..

BONAR BRADBERRY

“The craziest one for me was probably the end of summer party in our third year. We were playing with Crazy P in the 'Alley' at the back of the Mint Club. It's not really a room, but it was so busy that night that they turned it into one with an extra soundsystem... The atmosphere was unforgettable, people were literally climbing up the walls.”

TOM THORPE (PBR STREETGANG)

“Getting persuaded to get on a flight to Ibiza after Asylum one night. Someone booked my flight, I was then dropped off at Leeds station where I took the train to Manchester Airport. Once getting on the plane I drank my bodyweight in gin and tonic, played noughts and crosses on a friend's chest and got told off by the cabin crew several times! Landing in Ibiza, I went straight to Space followed by DC10, then Es Vive. On Tuesday, I realised where I was and what I was doing... nearly cried! Booked my flight home that night. On the way home, my friend passed out on the toilet at thirty-thousand feet. Myself and the staff had to wake him up via undoing the door with a screwdriver. On the last leg of the journey home I got a train from Manchester, fell asleep, overshot Leeds and woke up in York! I eventually got to bed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, half the man I was... painful, but fun!”

SIMON BAKER

“Closing the terrace at the Fav garden party in 2009, dropping 'Piano Baby' was a moment to remember forever.”
