JOCKEY JOURNAL: DIMITRI VEGAS & LIKE MIKE

EDM duo's tour diary

In the words of DJ Mag's resident Geordie, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are a “canny big deal”. Ranked at No.38 in our Top 100 DJs poll, they've brought levels of adrenaline usually reserved for parachute jumping to the most prestigious stages in the world, culminating in this year's main stage closing set of Tomorrowland, the footage of which has racked up almost two million views (!) on YouTube over the past month.

With collaborations with the likes of Laidback Luke and a stack of releases on Dim Mak doing the rounds, it doesn't get much bigger than Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike...

CREAMFIELDS, UK
DIMITRI: “What a crazy day! We knew it was going to be a big one. Creamfields has always been a big event for us but this year was insane just because we found out we were replacing David Guetta! Apparently his plane was on fire, which of course sucked for him, but to get such a big slot, we were loving it. We got to play our original set and then this extra one, so we were completely buzzing. The crowd were so up for it, the energy was huge, the tracks were dropping like bombs and the whole place was going off.”

FRIDAY, TOMORROWLAND, BELGIUM
MIKE: “The perfect start to our Tomorrowland. We really couldn’t have asked for anything more. It’s always an incredible feeling to play up on the main stage, looking out across the bowl and seeing 50,000 people in front of you, but to get to do the closing set really is something special. The whole place was jumping, the vibe was electric, the production was of course out of this world and when the fireworks went off, you can imagine, it was absolutely nuts. Loved every minute of it, wish we could do it every day. Also we managed to break the YouTube live stream record from last year during our show, which felt awesome.”

SATURDAY, TOMORROWLAND, BELGIUM
DIMITRI: “Today we were up with our good friend Laidback Luke at the Super You and Me stage, and things got a little bit comic book crazy! I dressed up as Ironman with Luke as Superman and Sander Van Doorn as Batman for a special b2b2b Tomorrowland set. It was good fun and of course there were a ton of pictures of us looking awesome all over the net as well.

We also got to chill out backstage with friends and family in the sunshine before the rain started — and when it started, we thought we might need to build a boat! But nothing stops Tomorrowland, not even a flood.”

SUNDAY, TOMORROWLAND, BELGIUM
MIKE: “This was another big one for us, our Smash the House stage. The place was packed, we could see flags from pretty much every country in the world, or at least it seemed like it, the crowd was just ready to give it up from the word go. Every single guest artist we invited ripped through some amazing sets — Wolfpack, Moguai,Kaskade, Showtek, Chuckie — it was incredible. The energy during our set was unreal. Especially when even Steve Angello made a surprise appearance to present our new collaboration together, the crowd went through the roof. They totally weren't expecting it! The only thing that probably topped it all off was having our entire family up on stage with us towards the end. Having your parents and your grandparents right behind you going mental to your music in front of thousands, how many people can say that?”

PACHA, IBIZA
DIMITRI: “The White Island has been huge for us this year and we’ve played at Pacha almost every week, but probably the Pure Pacha opening party this year was the wildest. The place was packed with some seriously beautiful people, which of course you kind of expect from Pacha, but they were so into the music and feeling the drops, the builds, hanging from the podiums and stages, at one point they were jumping so hard that it felt like the decks were vibrating!

To get that many cool people just seriously losing it to the music, for us that’s why Pacha is always going to stay one of the true global superclubs. It’s just got passion for music running through its veins. Plus since we have been living there 'in and out' so many years, it's nice to be playing practically every week in your second home!”
