For many years French techno legend Garnier released on F Communications (F-Comm), the label he ran with Eric Morand. Most of his classics tracks such as 'The Man With The Red Face' and albums like '30' and 'Unreasonable Behaviour' came out on F-Comm, but when the label shut up shop in 2008 Garnier was left without a permanent home for his recorded output.
Since then he's sporadically dotted releases around labels he respects and admires, starting off with the 'Back To My Roots EP' for Innervisions in 2008, the label run by Dixon and Ame.
In 2010 he gave 'It's Just Muzik'/'Stargazing' to Damian Lazarus's Crosstown Rebels, and in 2012 he released the 'Timeless EP' on Pedro Winter's Ed Banger.
Each time he does such a thing, it is an event as well as an endorsement for the label he appears on, so this is understandably a big deal for 50Weapons, the sub-label of Monkeytown Records that's run by German experimentalists Modeselektor.
50Weapons has released material by Cosmin TRG, Benjamin Damage, Addison Groove, Marcel Dettmann, Shed and Modeselektor themselves in the past.
Lead track on the 'AF 4302 EP', 'M.I.L.F' is a dark, flittery elongated atmospheric technoid cut. 'D.S.K' is also quite dark, while 'H.E' begins with a vocal — “Hey gorgeous, do you know what it feels like to be tied up and licked from head to toe” — before unfolding into a classic techno piece.
Garnier has also just updated his superb Electrochoc book on electronic music. More info here
