DJ MAG WEEKLY PODCAST: ANDY ASH
Raw, steely deep house and techno from Fly By Night regular
With a name that sounds best in a scouse accent, it's fitting that Andy Ash is from Liverpool.
What is surprising, however, is this guy's youth. Knocking out tunes with the depth and dexterity of a veteran, he's only been DJing and producing for five years. His recent rise to prolificacy — off the back of two handfuls of releases for the likes of his own Boogie Originals imprint, FOTO and On The Prowl — has seen him slate his biggest slabs of wax to date since the start of 2014, both in February.
First came 'Workin EP' on Steve Bug's Dessous label — three slick house grooves including deep New Jersey-influenced 'Mindflow' — then followed 'Hard Groove' on Fly By Night Music, his third for the pint-sized London-based imprint responsible for excellent cuts from Riccio, Giorgeo Luceri and Mayo Soulomon in recent months.
The mix is a steady, careful selection of vinyl with the odd raw touch giving it a sense of immediacy, encapsulating Andy's deft touch while live in the booth. Featuring tunes — both old and new — from Omar S, UR/Aaron Carl, Glen Underground, Last Magpie and Joy O/Pearson Sound/Boddika, and more, it crosses deep and indigo house with heady acidic techno almost seamlessly, before breaking out into garage for an explosive ending.
