Matt Harvey will headline DEF:INITION's second birthday bash at North London's Clockwork alongside d&b legends Bad Company, Red One, DJ Spinz, Inter, Turmoil & Leks feat. Deefa with MC's Joker D, DVs and Illmatika.
Matt (aka Matty C) first met Evan Short (aka Kiljoy) at school when they were just eleven years old and they soon formed their own band, playing covers of the Stones and Eric Clapton. Years later they both coincidently fell in love with rave culture about the same time and were reunited by their love of music - only this time it was the sounds of jungle that got them experimenting with creating their own sounds.
After meeting up at sound engineering school they quickly began writing their own music and Concord Dawn was formed. Reaching underground success very quickly in Kiwiland, they released their first self-titled album in July 2000, which was followed by a successful national tour. Their second album, 'Disturbance', was released in April 2001, which won several awards.
In 2002 Matt immersed himself in London's d&b culture for five months, then on returning to NZ started working on 'Uprising', the so-called difficult third album, which for these boys appears to have been anything but as the album went gold in NZ within three months.
Their fourth album - entitled 'Chaos by Design' to reflect its eclecticism - came out in 2005 to international acclaim and a triumphant word tour. Tracks have been signed by the likes of Metalheadz, Ram Records and Hospital Recordings and with things kicking off on such a global scale, Matt is currently spending as much time in Europe as possible to take care of business on this side of the planet. So hopefully this gig is just a sign of things to come…
In the meantime, this is his only London show in the near future, so get down to Clockwork, 96¬98 Pentonville Road, Islington N1, as early as you can on Saturday night as there are no advance tickets. Doors open at 9pm and there's also going to be a second room of funk, soul and hip-hop, live breakdancers and drink promotions, including 2 for £5 vodka Redbull and 3 for £5 Grolsch. It's just £6 before midnight and £10 after. See www.clubdefinition.co.uk for more info.
