60 Seconds With...Gilles Peterson

The global trotting, beat digging, eclectic legend that is Gilles Peterson is going from strength to strength with his Brownswood Recordings imprint.

With the latest edition of his futuristic soul compilations, 'Brownswood Bubblers Two', due to drop on the label on 11th June, we snagged the jazz master to talk soul, sushi and shit saxophonists...

Unlike your other compilations, the 'Brownswood Bubblers' series focuses on modern and futuristic soul. What did you set out to do with these collections?

"I'm getting so much good music sent through to me in different ways, online and demos, and people coming through who haven't really got major deals or deals at all. So really it's just stuff that I've been championing on the radio, and really trying to get some newer names through on the back of it."

You've compiled tracks from Brazil, Africa and America - where next on your global digging adventures?

"I'm doing a Gilles Peterson in Japan, which should be out later this year or early next year. I'm also doing an 'In the House' for Defected, a 'Gilles Digs America Volume 2' for Ubiquity, and there's also something I'm doing with Fania, a Puerto Rico comp."

You're famously eclectic in your tastes – anything you don't like?

"I really don't like house records with bad saxophone solos on them!"

You're a sushi aficionado – can you recommend a good sushi joint?

"It's not a sushi restaurant, it's a Japanese restaurant opened up called Akari on Essex Road, London. They do Asahi draught in there which is a little bonus, and it's really good value, it's the best in North London. It's getting really popular now which is good to see."

Where in the world's your favourite club or venue?

"I always enjoy playing Club Yellow in Tokyo."

Any tracks or artists that are really exciting you now?

"I'm really into Tawiah. And Jose James, he's a new guy signed to my label, he's going to be coming out later this year."
