Laurie Anderson's otherworldly electronic track 'O Superman', which presaged techno by many years, has been re-released by Nonesuch Records. Originally a surprise UK hit in 1982, the seminal synthpop tune was pulled from Anderson's futuristic 'Big Science' album, with its simultaneous lyrical theme of the deadly allure of technology and a musical theme that embraced electronic wizardry like loops, sampling and technoid percussion - anticipating a whole host of electronic musical genres in the process.
A conceptual artist and part of the same New York set as David Byrne of Talking Heads and Philip Glass, Anderson became an unlikely pop star when her adaptation of 19th century French operatic composer Jules Massenet's aria 'O Souverain', was picked up for release by the tiny New York City indie label 110 Records. A few spins by John Peel led to Warner Bros signing her up and the rest is history.
