THE SUPERSTAR DJS WHO WERE DISCOVERED BY DJ COMPETITIONS

From wildcard to worldwide!

This month we teamed up with Miller Genuine Draft and Mixcloud for the Miller SoundClash competition - which gives one lucky DJ the chance to fly to Las Vegas to compete with other artists from around the world for a chance to play at the Top 100 DJs party at Marquee Las Vegas with some of the world’s best DJs!

But where will this opportunity lead? That really depends on the DJ and how well they take their chance. Here we look at three DJs who began us wildcards, and went on to conquer the biggest dancefloors on the planet.

JAMES ZABIELA
James Zabiela is the poster-boy for many a bedroom DJ. Not only did he hone his craft experimenting with kit in his bedroom, but he made his name by developing a unique style and handing out mixtapes to promoters, DJs and entering DJ competitions. His mix for Muzik Magazine’s Bedroom Bedlam DJ competition for the best mix of 2001 got him signed to his idol Sasha’s booking agency and set him on the path to main stage domination!

SONNY WHARTON
Tech house don Sonny Wharton got his big break by entering a DJ Mag competition to win a set at Renaissance at Amnesia in Ibiza. He impressed so much at his prize winning gig that he was offered the chance to become resident at the infamous Manumission parties in Ibiza and went on to play huge gigs and festivals across the planet. These days he is repping his Wharetone
brand across the globe

YOUSEF
Another benefactor of Muzik’s Bedroom Bedlam competition (you can listen to his winning mix here), Yousef got his break in 1997. He went on to create the Circus brand which we continues to run across the planet in between releasing on Sven Vath’s Cocoon Recordings and DJing worldwide.

Will Miller SoundClash unearth the star of tomorrow? Give the mixes a listen here and let them know what you think! If you want to take part - you need to be quick, as the closing date is tomorrow. Head on over to Mixcloud and submit your mix!
