The Balearic DJ/producer's new opus is great for a sunny afternoon
Twenty years ago, Chris Coco's Coco Steel & Lovebomb project explored the more mellow side of electronic music.
He went on to help pioneer the chillout movement that reached its zenith in the late 1990s — before a thousand cash-in chillout compilations ruined the scene — and scored a show on BBC Radio 1 with Bestival man Rob Da Bank. Oh, and he also edited DJ Mag for the whole of the '90s.
Chris has been producing and DJing ever since, and thinks that chill-out music is now making a comeback.
“I think there is a chill-out renaissance happening right now,” Chris tells DJ Mag in the new July issue. “And I think this chill-out renaissance is all to do with dubstep.”
Citing the likes of James Blake as an introspective producer making spacey chill-out music influenced by dubstep, Chris released a compilation called 'Night Bus' last year on Melodica Records that gathered together some slightly wonky late-night soundscapes — perfect for listening to on headphones after a club-night.
Now he's made 'The Chillout Album', with assorted bits of found sound dripped over ambient atmospherics. It's great for kicking back and listening to on a sunny afternoon.
