Diplo: ‘Skrillex has had the biggest cultural impact of any DJ artist’

What do you reckon?

Last week, Diplo appeared on the popular No Jumper Podcast. During the 90-minute interview he and the show’s hosts, Adam22 and Robesman, discussed everything from collaborations, the once ubiquitous hit single ‘Lean On feat. MØ’, the disaster that was Fyre Festival and, of course, his relationship with “EDM culture”.

The immensely successful producer – real name Thomas Wesley Pentz – also discussed his opinions on Skrillex, with whom he has previously collaborated under the Jack Ü monicker.

“He was one of my most influential people in the last five years of my life because of his attitude and what he does,” he said of the multi-Grammy award winning producer and DJ.

"As an artist he’s so far. For me he’s probably the best out of all the DJ artists. He’s gone as far as anybody, had the most cultural impact [out of] anybody...He changed the face of LA in a way...he did so much for the city in my world".

That being said though, there was no suggestion in the interview that the pair’s new collaboration – which was hinted at back in December – was anywhere near actual fruition, with Diplo admitting that they hadn’t actually spoken in a while.

Diplo is no stranger to vocalising opinions his opinions on EDM culture. In this No Jumper interview he spoke about EDM producers’ tendency to “copy” one another and how Zedd is an example of a producer who “jumps on whatever the trend is just to make it on the radio.” Earlier this month, he told Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 that “Calvin Harris did EDM better than anyone else”.

It’s a been a busy first quarter of 2018 for the Mad Decent boss, who earlier this month launched his new radio show on Sirius XM and who released his new ‘California’ EP just last week.
