Idris Elba played the James Bond tune tune at the beginning of his DJ set at Elrow Town London this weekend (19th August).
The actor/DJ opened his set at the festival with a remix of the famous 007 theme music, raising further speculation that he could be set to take on the role after its current star, Daniel Craig.
It’s long been discussed among fans and the media that Elba – known for his roles in The Wire and Luther, to name but a few – would be a perfect fit for the role of 007. Last Sunday (August 12th), rumours that he would be taking on the part were ignited once again when the actor tweeted a mysterious selfie with the text, “My name is Elba, Idris Elba”, a clear reference to Bond’s famous catchphrase.
Just a few hours later, however, Elba followed up the tweet with a picture of Public Enemy alongside their famous lyric, “Don’t believe the hype”.
All of this came in the same week that it was reported by The Daily Star that Bond film producer Barbara Broccoli had told director Antoine Fuqua “it is time” to cast a non-white actor in the role. Fuqua reportedly responded saying that “Idris could do it if he was in shape...You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”
Shortly after this report, however, the rumours were shot down once again by a representative for Fuqua, who told the Hollywood Reporter that, “He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting,” “It’s all made up stuff. Not sure how it got started.”
Elba’s opening of his set at Elrow town this weekend with the Bond theme could well be seen as being yet another clue, feeding into the mild hysteria that that rumour mill has regenerated this past week. That said, it could just as easily be the DJ/actor’s way of poking fun at the whole situation. You can check out the full set below, which was streamed live exclusively by DJ Mag yesterday.
Either way, Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role as 007 in 2019 for the 25th Bond film.
Meanwhile, Elba is dividing his time between plenty of other projects in both music and film. This month marks the official release of his directorial debut for the British crime drama, Yardie.
He is also set to DJ at SW4 festival in Clapham this weekend (25th - 26th August). Earlier this month, Elba also DJ’d at Boardmasters festival in Cornwall, the full stream of which you can revisit on DJ Mag’s YouTube channel.
