X-Press 2 were one of the principal house acts in the early '90s, rocking the floors with cuts like post-hardcore progressive house cut 'Muzik Xpress' — with its memorable “Music, music, music” refrain — and the cowbell-tastic 'London Xpress'. When DJ Mag enters a disused pub in south-east London’s Rotherhithe, we find LTJ Bukem has arrived early and is waiting patiently for us on a sofa in the pub’s old bar area. A true originator of drum & bass, Bukem, aka Danny Williamson, then throws himself into his part of the photo-shoot in a small, sparsely-lit room, which, much to everyone’s amusement, was once the gents’ toilets in the now-converted boozer.

“Sometimes it does feel like a waste paying two rents but I’m happy to have the flexibility,” says Lee Foss, the DJ who still splits his life between London and LA, despite spending most of his life on the road. Having recently hit the UK charts with ‘Benediction’ as part of Hot Natured, Hot Creations, the label he runs with partner Jamie Jones, continues to consolidate its position — and live up to its name — as one of the world’s hottest house labels.

Anonymity’s quite the fashion these days. Hand-stamped white labels from big-name producers emerge every week, with press releases proclaiming artists free from the shackles of fame, whose metaphorical masks let them experiment with sounds bereft of preconception. Which is all well and good when you’re knocking out short-run 12”s of faceless techno.
