Beyond the Top 100 DJs poll 2013 there's a whole world of underground DJs pushing the boundaries of their art-form and championing the most forward-thinking new music. The DJs in our annual Alternative Choice feature represent a selection of unsung heroes selected by the DJ Mag team.

As was the case in many towns and cities in the UK in the late '80s, a sizeable portion of the youth of Stafford were infected with the rave bug. More or less equidistant between London and Manchester in the West Midlands (18 miles south of Stoke-on-Trent, 16 miles north of Wolverhampton), Stafford became notable for spawning two of the rave scene’s most successful acts – Altern8 and Bizarre Inc. And then, later, Chicken Lips too.


Try to categorise Dismantle at your peril. Like his name alludes, the Brighton-based producer has been taking apart the genre boundaries at the seams and engineering his own unique blends of bass-heavy influences — which range from jump-up drum & bass and bleeping Dutch house to Bugz In The Attic-esque breakbeat and classic reggae. 


When we recently caught up with monkey obssessed Berlin electro/techno duo Modeselektor – aka Gernot and Szary - it was before their only UK date of the year.

Making his name in the 1990s as a melodic avant-garde electronic producer using pseudonyms such as u-Ziq, Jake Slazenger and Tusken Raiders, Mike Paradinas was a peer of experimental artists such as Luke Vibert, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. In fact, he did an album with Richard D. James (Aphex), 'Expert Knob Twiddlers' as Mike & Rich, in the mid-'90s — the two producers were pictured on the cover playing Connect 4 — before launching his acclaimed Planet Mu label.


Fans of Scottish singer-songwriter Darius of Pop Idol fame (we know you are out there!) look away now. The only Darius we are concerned about is of the Syrossian variety.

‘Killer’ started life as an instrumental, and it was only ever going to be one until I met Seal,” Adamski tells DJ Mag. “He came to [big rave] Sunrise 5000 at Santa Pod, although I didn’t meet him there. He walked in when I was playing and he had an epiphany.” Seal wanted to record with Adamski immediately, and Adamski — real name Adam Tinley — liked the sound of Seal’s voice from a demo of ‘Crazy’ that he’d heard.
