The dust has settled from our Best Of British awards and we’ve put together this special issue of the magazine, celebrating all that is great about the UK’s electronic music scene. From clubs and festivals to labels, DJs and producers, our homegrown scene is incredibly rich and diverse — and from page 23 onwards we profile all the winners. Rebekah is our cover star this month, the diminutive Birmingham-born, Berlin-based techno powerhouse who scooped Best Producer on the night. Her story about taking a while to find her true sound makes for fascinating reading, and elsewhere we feature other winners on the night such as Fatboy Slim, Andy C, James Zabiela, Four Tet, Willow, DocScott, D Double E, CamelPhat, Weiss, Ellie Cocks and more, and all the label, club and festival winners. Congratulations to all. Brexit may be causing uncertainty for many people in our scene, but it feels healthy enough to weather any storms. Elsewhere in this issue we take some DJs back to school to see how they fare in the new DJ GCSE exam (page 56); tip some Ones To Watch for 2019 (p62); look at the practice of inflating the cost of rare vinyl on Discogs (p71); and investigate whether wealth, privilege and class are causing an imbalance in our scene (p78). It’s much harder today to launch a career in the music industry without the funding-cushion of the dole or something like the Enterprise Allowance scheme. Perhaps this is something the UK government needs to look at if we’re going to continue to churn out world-beating artists, DJs and promoters as we head into 2019 and beyond.CARL LOBENEditor
