February can be a slightly depressing time to be a dance music fan. The cold and dark climes of the Northern Hemisphere can make a trip to your local nightclub feel more arduous than a mission to the moon, while we yearn longingly for our annual trips to Mexico. Luckily, this issue is stacked full of features to distract you from your next bout of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), including our bright-burning cover star ANNA and her hard-hitting brand of incendiary techno. For our Feb cover, we met with the Brazilian-born techno selector in her current hometown of Barcelona, to talk personal evolution, mental health and what she’s got coming next (page 22). We also asked her to big up some of her fellow Latin American artists, including Wehbba, Terr and more (page 30). We’ve kept the techno vibes flowing with our long-reads on the influence of Roland’s iconic TR-909 drum machine (page 32) and a deep dive into Japan’s vital and eclectic techno scene (page 44). Our regular 10 Moments feature taps up Aussie-born Alison Wonderland to inject some bass into our February mag (page 50), while our six-page narrative on Defected Records charts the history of one of house’s most successful imprints (page 60). As usual our team of roving reporters have hit the hottest parties over the New Year for our On The Floor section, chalking up reviews of party cruise Holy Ship (page 80), plus Asia’s coolest underground festival Epizode (page 84). House and disco dons Mella Dee and Tiger & Woods join us for interviews in our Tech section (pages 117 to 119), plus we wrapped up all the best new bits of kit from around the globe. So snuggle up on the couch and put on ANNA’s all-new and superb BBC Radio One Essential Mix while you read this month’s issue — treat yourself, you deserve it! CHARLOTTE LUCY CIJFFERS Commissioning Editor, DJ Mag North America
