There will be a Winter festival hosted by Anjunabeats label next year.
The news came via the Anjunafamily Facebook group, with a post simply asking "Do you ski? Do you snowboard? Do you like trance and progressive music? Do you like the thought of being around like-minded people in a pristine alpine environment? Can you be in Europe at the end of March 2020?"
Although further details are yet to be announced, the festival will take place from 28th March - 4th April 2020, and will be the first Anjunabeats Winter festival of its kind.
Above & Beyond have curated the Chill Mix for Phil Taggart's Chillest Show on Radio 1.
Featuring a diverse range of selections, not usually associated with the trance outfit's typical style, the mix opened with tracks from BANKS, James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, The xx, and more.
Since the early ’90s, when pioneers like Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, and Jam & Spoon crafted some of the earliest and best-loved trance records, the genre has gone through huge swings in popularity. Today, the sound is as strong as ever, as artists like Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, and plenty of newcomers fly the flag for trance the world over. To find out why the genre has endured for so long, we spoke to some of its greatest producers – and some of their answers may surprise you.
HOW HAS TRANCE CHANGED SINCE ITS EARLY DAYS?
MATT DAREY: Trance is a chameleon of electronic genres. It’s fused with, and taken influence, from every other genre along its journey. The old sounds return, then fuse with the new.
LORENZO SENNI: My interest in trance is focused on the build-up. I believe that trance evolved into EDM, which pushed the limits of what the build-up can do. Tension and release becomes a psychotic rollercoaster of emotions – the audience is already bored a few seconds after the drop, so there’s always a need for a new build-up to keep the attention high. This is taken to an extreme now, but I’m pleased to see that, actually.
WHY DO NEW GENERATIONS KEEP FALLING IN LOVE WITH TRANCE?
MATT DAREY: I think it’s the way that trance feels like a universal family, connected and nurtured by fans, DJs, and producers. Above & Beyond and Armin Van Buuren in particular are titanic forces in this, focusing their efforts on maintaining this family feeling. They’ve undoubtedly kept the genre growing.
Legendary trance trio Above & Beyond have shared details for their forthcoming album, ‘Flow State’.
Veering away from the propulsive trance and anthemic pop that has defined their recent material such as the ‘Common Ground’ LP and their recent Anjunabeats mix LP, the trio’s new album will be exclusively comprised of ambient and neo-classical music, inspired by yoga and mindfulness.
Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond will team up for a one-off party at Ibiza's Ushuaïa this summer.
On Friday 12th July the trance legends will touch down at the open air venue, with support coming from Ruben de Ronde and Estiva, who are both residents at Armin Van Buuren's Hï Ibiza residency and Armada Music affiliates.
The Night League, the team behind the Ushuaïa Ibiza events, have promised "huge anthems, many exclusives, massive pyrotechnics and a simply unbeatable atmosphere for this unmissable date for the trance master."
