Poll Clubs 2019: CHINESE LAUNDRY

Location: Sydney, Australia

Capacity: 800

Billing itself as ‘Sydney’s most iconic underground nightclub’, Chinese Laundry is an internationally renowned venue, hosting DJs from all over the world, as well as local Aussie talent in and around Bondi. With genres spanning house, techno, hip-hop, electro and breaks, Laundry has brought the likes of Detroit Swindle, Leon Vynehall, CamelPhat, Patrick Topping and Dusky to the picturesque Sydney shores. Opened in 1996, it’s still one of Sydney’s most popular party spots across two regular residences: LNDRY and Bassic. After a long day of surfing on Bondi beach, Laundry is the perfect heads-down wind-down.

One of the biggest, longest-running clubs in Sydney is a near permanent feature in our Top 100 Clubs poll. The club has three different rooms all with an intimate feel, as well as a terrace. It has a broad remit that takes in house, electro, tech, bass, party mash-up, hip-hop and breaks, as well as plenty of key DJs from Europe when on tour. Sonny Fodera, Nina Kraviz, Marcel Dettman and more all visited in the last 12 months.

Originally a gift given to Sydney businessman Justin Hemmes on his 18th birthday (not a bad present, right?), the long-running Chinese Laundry has consistently hosted top-drawer international DJs (Nina Kraviz, Stephan Bodzin, and Marcel Dettmann have all played in the past year) and founded the careers of much homegrown Aussie talent.

Spread out over three rooms — The Laundry, The Cave and The Sand Bar — the club also boasts a lush outdoor courtyard for open-air shape-cutting. With a music policy that's all about promoting fresh faces, Friday’s popular BASSIC night is the place to be for all things dubstep, trap and bass.
