Poll Clubs 2020: SOS Club

Location: Hangzhou, China
Capacity: 2,000

Having shaken up the Chinese scene when it first opened its doors back in 2005, Hangzhou’s curiously named SOS now finds itself as one of the elder statesmen within Asia’s ever-evolving electronic music landscape. Located in China’s fifth biggest city, the club has become as famous for championing local talent as it has booking internationally celebrated acts, striking a balance many venues strive for but few actually achieve.

Divided into four separate arenas, all powered by state of the art Fulcrum soundsystems and housing a varied selection of music, it’s not hard to understand why SOS still enjoys such a strong bottle-popping following.

An SOS might be an internationally-recognised cry for help, but there’s very little wrong with the rampaging Chinese club scene, which has quickly become one of the key global markets. And SOS Club is a shining beacon of EDM in Hangzhou, the Zhejiang Province capital in the east of China. Launched in 2005, SOS Hangzhou is one of the oldest clubs in the region and — thanks to its VIP-friendly 2016 refit and rock-solid EDM booking policy — remains one of the most in-demand dancefloors in China. A large part of that is due to the club's festival-level production, while a local population in excess of 20 million offers a huge target audience increasingly raised on a diet of EDM with big beats and bigger basslines.

The action takes place over four distinct dancefloors and zones all powered by Fulcrum soundsystems, with eight separate VIP areas catering to the big-spenders. SOS have maintained their big-name bookings policy, with Don Diablo, Alison Wonderland and Krewella all delivering suitably seismic sets in 2018 with more of the same lined up this year. As distress calls go, we think SOS Hangzhou have this EDM emergency well in hand.

With China’s club scene truly blossoming, Hangzhou’s SOS has a highly respectable position as one of the oldest venues in current club culture as it’s been inviting international acts and nurturing local talent since 2005. Fresh from its full refurb in late 2016, the venue has galvanized its role in China’s fifth largest city as one of the most exciting venues. Four arenas, all loaded with fine-tuned Fulcrum soundsystems, a good balance of party space and exclusive VIP areas and host to travelling superstars such as Steve Aoki, DVBBS, Alan Walker, Zomboy, GTA and many more, SOS’ position in one of the world’s most thriving club scenes remains as strong as it’s been for 13 years.
