What to say about Fabric that hasn’t be said a hundred times over already? The London institution is one of the world’s most beloved venues — it’s constant placing in the Top 100 Clubs is proof enough of that. But beyond that it seems nearly everyone in our industry (especially in the UK) has happy memories in the place; anyone who is anyone has played its hallowed halls, and when the club was shut down in late 2017, thousands upon thousands of dance music fanatics came to its aid, signing a petition, sharing stories and campaigning to get its license reinstated.

A former cold meat storage warehouse in Farringdon, descending down into the club’s depths is enough to get the blood of any dedicated skanker pumping, and that’s before even experiencing room one’s ‘bodysonic’ dancefloor and Martin Audio soundsystem, room two’s 26-speaker Pioneer Pro Audio XY series setup, or the intimate rave cave that is room three.

And this year there’s even more to get excited about, with Fabric celebrating its milestone 20th anniversary. Twenty special extended-set XX events will run throughout the year, while in October — when the club’s birthday lands — there’ll be celebrations every weekend.

Two new residents — Londoners Anna Wall and Bobby — have joined OGs Craig Richards and Terry Francis, and more are set to be announced later in the year. And after finishing off both the ‘Fabric’ and ‘Fabriclive’ mix series in 2018, a new compilation mix ‘Fabric presents’ has been launched, starting with Bonobo. With more events in the series still being kept under wraps, Fabric’s landmark year will be just that. Here’s to the next 20...

There’s a strong case for Fabric being London’s ultimate club. No other venue has held so steadfast in its mission. Located on the site of a former meat storage unit in Farringdon, the club has maintained an underground ethos since it opened in October 1999. Its key promotions Fabriclive (bass music variants twice a month on Fridays) and Fabric (house, techno and electro on Fridays and Saturdays) have made a point of booking the most skilled DJs and championing new subterranean talent, while WetYourSelf! On Sundays is a polysexual party with a minimal techno focus.

Its Saturday residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis are known for their deeply dug DJ sets, and Fabriclive resident Skankandbass has made a considerable name in recent times too. Never standing still, fabric has recently added a new night to its event line up too: Forms. This promotion focuses on house, featuring everyone from lo-fi boss Mall Grab to tech-house wizard wAFF.

Fabric’s three rooms boast cutting-edge sound. The flagship Room One has a vibrating “bodysonic” dancefloor, which immerses dancers in bass frequencies. There have been a few cosmetic changes recently: “The Room Two soundsystem was properly unveiled last year and has been a huge talking point for our artists and crowd,” says Kirsti Weir from fabric. “Room Three has also seen a change: we moved the booth to the centre of the floor last spring.” Plenty of reasons why, for a lot of you, Fabric remains your favourite club.

The story of Fabric’s 2016 will go down in dance music folklore. After famously being shuttered following the deaths of two teenagers from drug-related causes during the summer last year, pretty much the whole of clubland united behind Fabric’s #saveourculture campaign to have their license reinstated. The situation also had a wider impact on clubbing culture, acting as a catalyst to open up the conversation about policing, planning and licensing venues in the UK.

And since reopening in January, the Farringdon venue has welcomed a huge array of artists back to EC1, including regulars like Seth Troxler and Ben UFO, as well as Ricardo Villalobos, who Fabric’s promotion manager Judy Griffith describes as an “honorary resident” when speaking to DJ Mag about Fabric’s year. “He was returning home,” he explains. “A sight we never thought we would see again and it was emotional for all of us, Ricardo included.”

Having won Best Large Club at DJ Mag’s Best of British awards in December, as well as boasting Best Resident in Craig Richards, who Blackett says remains vital to the club after 17 years as musical director alongside Terry Francis. “They have both totally mastered their craft. The new generation can learn a thing or two from these guys. We all can, it’s like an education every week. You really are watching masters at work when you see them play.”

Changes were made to the club’s operations before Fabric could reopen, which include raising the age restriction to 19, the addition of ID scanners and other security measures. The Farringdon venue also switched programming on Fridays, taking FabricLive fortnightly in order to make room for artist-led nights that see Rødhåd, Jon Hopkins, Daphne and more all head up parties this year. The result is a definitive victory for clubland, whilst re-establishing Fabric as the beating heart of London club culture.

When it first opened in 1999, Fabric was a top class addition to London’s underground nightlife. Building on the quality line-ups that places like The End had been securing, the labyrinthine former meat-packing warehouse immediately foregrounded techno and drum & bass and has been invaluable to the continued flourishing of those scenes over all the years since. For instance, DJ Hype’s Playaz night has been running since virtually the start, providing a regular central London home for the drum & bass scene to continue to blossom.

The growth of breakbeat and dubstep in the UK — the club made Caspa and Rusko residents in the mid-noughties before anybody had heard of them — also owed a lot to Fabric, and although these styles have fallen away somewhat in recent times, Fabric continues to innovate. The resurgent grime sound has featured significantly over the past couple of years, and in 2016 Fabric is making its debut at a festival by hosting a space at Lovebox in London this summer.
