Daft Punk
| NEW ENTRY

Such has been Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo's omnipotence this year that, at times, it has appeared that the Daft Punk robots are effortlessly pulling the strings of popular culture on a whim - how else, for example, do you explain their inclusion in this list?
From their contentious first directorial effort, 'Electroma' (quite literally two robots walking across the salt flats of California for what seems like for ever), to 2007's other auteur, Kanye West, sampling them for his 'Stronger single' - and Thomas and Guy-Man, or their robots, popping up in his video - Daft Punk have, to use awkward American vernacular, 'owned' the last 12 months. Indeed, arguably their stock hasn't been this high since the release of 'Homework' some 10 short years ago.

However, their greatest triumph in 2007 has been their continued return to and expansion within the live arena. Their global Alive 2007 tour has been met by the kind of rapturous reception only reserved normally for returning heroes - which in this case they are.
A vast spectacle of dazzling light and sound, with Thomas and Guy-Man conducting proceedings from behind a bank of technology, their performances have blown away all those fortunate to have caught them.

As the year ends with news that the dynamic French duo composed the music for the premiere of next year's Louis Vuitton campaign, Daft Punk once more sit in the enviable position of global superstars, with the watching world awaiting news of their every move.
