Not many DJs can count Space's cavernous Discoteca as the first big notch on their turntables so Greg Downey was clearly always destined for the big time. "I went out to Ibiza to play small venues and bars a couple of years ago and ended up being snapped up by Gatecrasher to play Space," he recalls. "Then I won the Eden DJ competition and played Eden's closing." Back home, though, it was back to reality and back to education. Yet the determined Northern Irishman soon saw his dreams take shape when John Digweed signed his 'Heaven Scent' remix to Bedrock last year. This year, though, Downey has made the step up to the big league proper. Releasing his live DJ mix on Discover was a good start and he followed up with his soaring 'Stadium' anthem on Paul van Dyk's Vandit. A long-term admirer of Downey's ascendant skills, the German trance titan then asked him to remix his own anthem 'New York'. DJ-wise, Downey has been clocking up the air miles at an increasingly rapid rate. "Buenos Aires was unbelievable," he beams. "Clubs were packed out from the minute I got there and were going off 'til nine in the morning. It's a real up-and-coming area for trance." Ironically, only Ibiza has evaded his DJ radar this year but it's surely only a matter of time before Cream and Judgement Sundays come calling.
