A humble but dedicated techno veteran, it seems strange that Marco Lenzi is only just breaking into the Top 100 for the first time. "I was a record shop owner and producer first, then a DJ after," he tells us. "I lived in Ibiza for three months in '87 then moved to London when the scene was taking off so I opened Silverfish Records. I started Molecular Recordings in 1993 and started getting bookings after that." But despite those early Ibizan romances, it's techno that peppers his set rather than Balearic, and he now bravely labels himself a minimalist. "Sometimes with a trend, people are like sheep and follow it," he explains. "But I have been playing and producing minimal techno for a very long time. Minimal techno has been around for nearly 15 years. It's not a new thing." Indeed, it was the original minimal godfather Robert Hood who included Marco's 'Taboo' on his Fabric CD this year - testament to Lenzi's authenticity of touch if ever one was needed. Citing his father and you, the people dancing, as his inspiration, Marco has spun all over the world this year, with South America - home of his occasional collaborator Anderson Noise - his preferred home from home. Next year will see Marco spending more time in the studio, releasing his debut album and re-launching Molecular Recordings.
