The year couldn't have started better for Joachim Garraud, as January saw him win Best French Producer & DJ 2008 from Only For DJs Magazine. But then, he isn't someone to do thing by half as his stage show demonstrates. Featuring the use of 80s keytars, Garraud had a spaceship built from scratch as part of the stage scenery. The mothership might have landed (again), but he soon realised the logistical nightmare. "It weighed nine tonnes so was pretty hard to move about on the tour!" You can probably blame another visit to Burning Man, part of a US tour in the middle of the year, for such mad aspirations. And while playing a set after a 45-minute eye-blinding sandstorm was one to remember, "the best thing in the year was recording the Toolroom Knights compilation. Mark Knight is great and it was an honour to do it. The label is so professional". Remixes for the stadium-sized Basement Jaxx and The Prodigy, plus MSTRKRFT and Felix Da Housecat are all in the pipeline, and a recent signing to Steve Aoki's hip Dim Mak label in the US precedes a collaboration with Aoki, as well as a Garraud track on the label. So not a bad end to '09 either.
