Questions Top100 DJs 2015 - Jon Dommett - 2015-11-16 14:39

“Cosmic Gate.”
Best known for:
“Staying true to ourselves!”
Tune of the year:
Eric Prydz ‘Opus’
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2015:
“Mark Sixma.”
What’s the most important skill a DJ should have?:
“To sound unique! Music selection and proper mixing is key also. Read the crowd, build your set with ups and downs and lead the people through the night.”
Is the future still bright for EDM?:
“Yes, if you think EDM actually means ‘Electronic Dance Music’. If you see EDM standing for the overwhelming big-room sound, its peak is fortunately over…”
Does the constant travelling and DJ lifestyle ever take its toll on you mentally?:
“Yes, it does. Constant lack of sleep, jet lag, living in the fast lane isn’t only exhausting for the body, but also for the mind. It’s important to take time off here and there.”
What cause is closest to your heart?:
“Definitely the refugee situation in Europe. It’s horrible news and we see the devastating pictures ever day. We simply have to stand together here and give a helping hand — let’s not forget a lot of our grandparents were refugees too.”
Which club would you like to bring back from the dead?:
“Guvernment Toronto, we definitely miss it!”
Why aren’t there more women in the Top 100 DJs poll?:
“Hard to say, but actually it’s pure maths, the big majority of DJs are men.”
What do you think of DJs who use ghost producers?:
“As long as they are good DJs at least, its ok with us. What’s a bit odd is pretending to be the producer and not give credit to the real writers of a song.”

Every year someone, somewhere, declares the death of trance music, and every year they’re proved wrong — trance is in just as rude health in 2015 as it was in 1999.

Trance’s ability to survive is testament to its passionate fans, and the scene’s biggest players — like German veterans Cosmic Gate — staying true to the trance sound, whilst others have jumped ship (yes, we’re talking about you, Tiesto).

German trance duo Cosmic Gate have been plying their melodious trade for well over two decades, and have featured in the Top 100 DJs poll numerous times. Claus Terhoeven and Stefan Bossems — better knows as Nic Chagall & DJ Bossi — have released six studio albums as Cosmic Gate, with their latest, ‘Start To Feel’, released on Armin van Buuren’s Armada imprint last year.

Cosmic Gate’s unflinching dedication to the trance sound has seen the German duo tour the world playing on average 130 shows a year. The duo are in as high demand now as they were when they penned scene-classics like ‘Be Your Sound’, ‘Fire Wire’ and ‘Exploration Of Space’. ANDREW RAFTER
