Located just a few streets away from Tokyo’s notorious red-light district, there’s a charmed seediness to Tokyo’s basement rave den Yello, which is neither as technologically obsessed nor as expansive as many of Japan’s more high profile venues.

Effortlessly cool rather than mindlessly cutting-edge, Yellow boasts the same soundsystem that was used in New York’s Paradise Garage with a crowd that favours the intimate, engulfing textures of quality deep house.

Appropriately, the likes of Kerri Chandler, Maurice Fulton and François K are favourites here but you’ll equally find DJs like Crosstown’s Damian Lazarus warping it out.

“An amazing sound and crowd to match,” says Wagon Repair’s Mathew Jonson. “Nothing beats the energy that you get on dancefloors of Japan and Yellow is the best example you’ll find.”
