EDM is still exploding in Brazil and deep house might be coming up the rear, but one venue that couldn't give a flying fuck is Warung Beach Club. Opened in 2002, this open-air clubbing location — made up primarily of a large teepee and a giant hut in the trees — isn't one for following trends. Instead, its vision is one that's been replicated time and again elsewhere. Hinged primarily on the purest form of escape possible — pitched as a Bali-themed hideaway lost deep in the Brazilian jungle — it's not just the setting that's worlds apart from its surroundings. Interested in underground styles of dance music way before the VIP glitterati turned their gaze to it, its music policy is pretty far-out too. These days under the auspices of D-Edge's Renato Ratier, each bill includes only the finest names of house and techno — the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Dixon — and that won't change for nobody. However, it's not just the calibre of the artists that make this club one of the world's most revered. The atmosphere — the buzz — is immense, and the sight of the orange sun rising above the dancefloor at 7am... it's simply mesmerising.
