E1 continues to host some of the biggest names in electronic music: Sven Väth, Âme, Luciano, Marcellus Pittman and Jeff Mills have all played the club this year alone. But the East London venue isn’t just for the heavy-hitters; the club’s founders are conscious of promoting local talent too, with diversity as a core focus. This is probably why they’re able to pull crowds with throbbing techno one night, skanking garage the next and brooding Afro-house another. The venue’s ludicrously banging soundsystem also doesn’t hurt. The simple layout allows the Funktion-One unit — also known as the wall of sound — to do what it does best, and those who are really whacked can always hang in the chillout area, taking in a meal or just resting before the next onslaught. Having opened in 2017, E1 has already made an indelible mark on the UK club scene. Long may it continue.
