Amnesia is the super club’s super club. Having outlived its early contemporaries and birthed a whole new genre and DJ style, this venue boasts a lifespan and history rare in clubland.
A home for hippies at first, the club soon spawned the first Balearic beat generation, selectors who worked out a new style of musical presentation and took inspiration from the slow-pulse, chugged-out rhythms of the island. Throughout the ’90s and ’00s it attracted the crème de la crème of DJ talent, pulling bigger international crowds to the island and helping to cement its place as a key clubbing destination.
The family-owned venue is fast approaching its 50th year and still gives the new clubs a run for their money. This season it brought out the big guns for its opening party, with sets from Adam Beyer, Special Request, Sama’ Abdulhadi and Seth Toxler B2B Skream in a 14-hour-long party. It also announced its elrow and Pyramid parties, and Jamie Jones, who moved his legendary Paradise series to the club last year, has decided to stay loyal to Amnesia this year, too. It’s not hard to see why this Ibiza icon continues to hold a place in our Top 100 Clubs list.
