Sven Väth

Sven Väth belongs in a museum. Specifically, the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt where, in June this year, the German DJ's friend and international photographer Andreas Gursky staged an exhibition of photographs documenting the Cocoon club that Väth has owned since 2004. Not that either Väth or Cocoon are now gathering dust in the annals of history however, for not only is Cocoon one of the most technologically advanced clubs in the world but the man behind it has had a marathon year even by his own breathless standards, beginning with a worldwide tour taking him everywhere from Birmingham to Brazil for the first five months of 2008 before setting up shop at Amnesia once more for what has turned out to be Cocoon's busiest Ibiza season ever. As Richie Hawtin has pointed out, it's down to Väth and Cocoon that techno has now grown into the dominant force on the White Island - something pretty much unimaginable ten years ago but which is now very much reality as seen in the queues around the block as punters try and squeeze in to catch sets from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano and the permanently grinning 'dark lord' of techno himself. But the DJ renowned for his rock & roll lifestyle has also managed to squeeze some r&r in the 'rest and recuperation' sense in as well - finally tying the knot with his fiancée at a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand in January. Which, if it's been a choice between spending time in his honeymoon bed or the studio, understandably explains why his own productions have been a bit thin on the ground this year, although he has consummated a couple of musical marriages in the form of the 'S'Krankt' 12" with Matt Rother and the 'Trashbindance' track with Roman Flügel, which was found on the recent 'Cocoon H' compilation.
