It's no exaggeration to say that Steve Aoki is a daredevil DJ. We grab a chat with him in-between his airplane stunt flying session and heading off on his private jet to play the closing party of his Pacha night in Ibiza. 

“It's so weird, it's just like you're going to die all the time and you feel like you're going to throw up all the time too, you go upside down, you've got the g-force it's so powerful, it makes you sick all the time,” he tells us about the former.

With his finger in so many cakes (ha, did you see what we did there?) it's hard to know where to start with Steve. Perhaps a simple congratulations on getting into the Top 100 DJs again? “It's always good to be in the Top 100. When you're in the Top 100 it's people that are voting for your name to be up there, it's a people's choice awards, so it's amazing and it means a lot to me.”

This year his campaign, 'Little Steve Big Dreams', focused on the ambitions he had when he was younger. “We've all been kids, or we are kids. DJing to people, playing music that people care about, we all started in the same place of being kids and hoping and dreaming,” he continues.

We speak to him one week shy of the release of his two-pronged album concept, the timely 'Neon Future', that's been over a year in the making. “It's a mega-collab, with singers, musicians,” Steve says as he starts to reel off a 'long as your arm list' that includes the likes of Afrojack, Bonnie McKee, Will I Am, Flux Pavilion and Machine Gun Kelly.

“It's a pretty diverse album for sure,” he muses. Title track 'Neon Future' is his favourite for the moment, because “it's the most musically definitive soundtrack to the future.” Vocals from Luke Steele certainly capture a futuristic vibe that the pair were aiming for when they produced “10 or 12 different vocal layers for the song.”

In other news, this year Aoki suggested a competition for fans to win a chance to spend time with him in the studio by remixing his current blaster 'Delirious'. Although this may have backfired on him. “The hard part is how we're going to humanly go through all the mixes we're being sent.” And not wanting to get potential winners too excited, he'll be checking out up-and-coming producers that “could be an avenue for Dim Mak Records”.

So, what plans for 2015? “'Neon Future' part two stage. Music videos for every single song, and I'm also featured in every video. So now my schedule is shows, studio, music video shoots, that pretty much takes up my time.”
