Don Diablo

One of the most prominent embodiments of EDM's second wave — alongside the likes of Heldens, Garrix and co — Don Diablo truly is at the height of his powers when we catch up with him in time for this year's poll.

With a gold-selling record for 'Chemicals' alongside hits like 'Tonight', 'Silence', 'Drifter' and 'What We Started', his own HEXAGON label and his first ever official world tour, 2016 has very much been this guy's year.

After touring and bringing his EDM/future house sounds to North and South America, Asia and Europe over the past 12 months, he's seen enough clubs to give us an update on the state of the scene globally. “I think it's a lot healthier than it was last year,” he holds forth. “The crowds are getting more and more educated as well, which means they are more open to things they haven't heard or experienced before. So all in all, personally, I feel we are moving towards a much better place.” ADAM SAVILLE

What have been the new frontiers for you this year? “I am set to embark on my first official world tour this year, with my own stage production and support acts.”

Is electronic music taken seriously enough as an art-form? “I'd like to think so, yes. In some cases, people might even take it too seriously.”

What’s the best new bit of DJ/production technology, and why? “Pioneer's DJM-900NXS2 mixer... it's definitely my mixer of choice at the moment.”

If you had to switch your style to another genre, what would it be? “Drum & bass, or just bass music in general.”

As a fan, what is the top price you would pay to see yourself DJ? “That really depends on the venue, the production around it and the rest of the line-up on the night, I guess...”

What can be done to prevent drug-related deaths at dance music events? “In Holland, we have stands at some of the bigger raves where you could test your drugs... if the punters are going to take drugs, promoters might as well make sure they are safe?”

How can we increase diversity in dance music? “The answer is simple: by staying open-minded.”
