Lucas & Steve

Best mates and long-standing production cohorts, Lucas de Wert and Steve Jansen tell us 2019 has been all about “touring, touring, touring, studio, touring, touring, studio, studio, sleeping, touring and touring.” They’re not fibbing…
This year has been a clear success for the Spinnin’-signed Dutch duo as they take their euphoric, melodic EDM sound to new places and new levels. The evidence was there as early as spring when US festival behemoth Ultra anointed their track ‘Inception’ as its official anthem. Coming straight off the back of a major Asia tour, it was a commendable kick-start to the year and triggered a whirlwind summer of major festival dates and more mainstream success with sing-along emotive pop such as ‘Where Have You Gone?’, ‘Long Way Home’ (with Deepend) and ‘Why Can’t You See?’

“We’ve also been very busy working on our album,” the duo reveal, suggesting 2020 could be an even bigger year. “We’re producing a wide range of music for this, ranging from club to commercial down-tempo songs. [We're] only doing the stuff that we love, and we’re thrilled to work on it. It’s going to be lit!”

Do you submit your DJ setlists to the relevant royalties collecting society?

“Yes we do.”

What more can we do to combat the mental health crisis in our scene?

“If things tend to go wrong, we should all talk more about it and break the taboo, that’s the way to start and a crucial first step.”

Are you personally doing anything to improve the gender balance of line-ups?

“Not really, the female DJs that we book for our Skyline Sessions line-ups are booked because we think they are really good, not because of their gender.”

What changes have you made this year to be more environmentally friendly?

“We eat less meat. As soon as we find a way to do less flights, we will jump on that immediately.”

What was your favourite toy when you were kids?

“KNEX! Je klikt het, je maakt het! (You click it, you make it).”

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Lucas: “Binge-watching Temptation Island and Ex On The Beach.” Steve: “Kinder chocolate.”
