What a year it’s been for Boris Brejcha, the man behind the masquerade-style, jester-faced mask and the “high-tech minimal” sound, a blend of melodic techno, house and trance elements, that’s often as hypnotic as it is uplifting. On the gig-side, the German DJ/producer “had a lot of fun” making his debut mainstage appearances at Belgium’s Tomorrowland and Awakenings in the Netherlands, hosted two massive shows with his FCKING SERIOUS gang at Hï Ibiza in August, went off on his first “real” US tour, and played his second eye-popping Cercle stream, this time at the Grand Palais in Paris. “I am now signed to the Ultra Music label and released some new stuff there,” he adds, referring to July’s moody, melancholic groover ‘Gravity feat. Laura Korinth’, hands-in-the-air anthem ‘Happinezz feat. Ginger’, and his bubbly three-track ‘Butterflies’ EP, both of which dropped in August. “But still, there is a lot of new shit coming,” he continues. “Let’s see where this leads...”

What more can we do to combat the mental health crisis in our scene?

“I can just talk from my point of view, but anytime I am sick I reaaaally struggle with cancelling a show because one feels responsible towards the fans. But in fact, we all have to listen to our body in the best possible way and should definitely cancel a show/tour when we’re feeling like it’s all too much. We need to take time for our inner-selves.”

What changes have you made this year to be more environmentally friendly?

“Well, me and my girlfriend are really trying to buy regional products which were produced in Germany and not all the imported stuff. We’re combining some days of vacations with the places we’re already at, to avoid flying around even more, and we’re nearly buying no more fruit and vegetables which are packed in plastic.”

What was your favourite toy when you were a kid?

“I had a castle from Lego which I built with my dad when I was very young. I really loved it.”

What’s your guilty pleasure?

“When I have finished a new track, I dance along in my studio all by myself, over-excitedly, to that song for hours to test if it would work good at a party.”
