At the beginning of the year, Julian Jordan promised to himself that he would focus on quality music instead of quantity. Ever since he made that promise, he says "every studio session has been a great success, and the crowd has reacted incredibly to the tracks”.
His biggest this year was ‘Oldskool’, which got plenty of plays during this year's Miami Music Week and got everyone talking.
Next to slicker studio processes, the Dutchman wanted to show the world a "next level" Julian Jordan with new show elements, new visuals, new artwork and a whole new look and feel. "I feel like my signature sound has never changed," he says. "The genre itself may have changed a bit over the years, but I still produce with the same passion, joy and creativity as when I started at 12 years old. Personally, I think it's really important to feel complete freedom when you start making a track.”
Next up is the launch of his very own YouTube channel: It's Julian Jordan! which will be a behind-the-scenes mini-series showing his life on the road and everything in between.
Do you submit your DJ setlists to the relevant royalties collecting society?
“Yes, because I know how hard producers work in this industry and we should support them in every way possible.”
What more can we do to combat the mental health crisis in our scene?
“Everyone should have someone to talk to. It's essential to have support around you as an artist or as a professional working behind-the-scenes.”
Are you personally doing anything to improve the gender balance of line-ups?
"Definitely! During ADE I was hosting my own event, and I made sure that were are female DJs on the line-up! Additionally, I supported an initiative from Bumble aimed at helping close the gender gap for female DJs and producers in the music industry.”
What changes have you made this year to be more environmentally friendly?
“Whenever I book a flight, I always choose to donate a percentage of the ticket price to go towards research for cleaner ways to fly.”
What was your favourite toy when you were a kid?
“Oh, I loved Hotwheels!”
What’s your guilty pleasure?
“Well, I love getting amongst nature. Between the hectic touring and long studio sessions, I love being in the woods where it’s nice and quiet.”
