From: “Planet Earth.”

Rising star DJ/producer of 2021: “John Summit.”

The mask-wearing maestro that is Claptone has been an unstoppable force since he burst onto the scene back in 2011. Gaining success with memorable tracks like ‘She Loves You’, ‘Cream’ and ‘No Eyes’ featuring Jaw on Berlin-based label Exploited, he’s been on a roll ever since.

As well as being a prominent fixture in the Top 100 poll since 2017, his music has made a mark in the clubs and in the charts over the years, with his releases on Exploited, Defected and Different, plus high-profile remixes of Florence & The Machine and Mark Ronson to New Order and Metronomy. He’s just finished his third studio album ‘Closer’ set for release this November, which features pop icons such as Seal and Barry Manilow. This year he’s also remixed Elton John and Dua Lipa, Faithless and many more.

He’s also back on tour with gigs in the USA and Europe, and he’s soon hosting his Masquerade parties in Montreal, Amsterdam and London.

How was your first gig back after lockdown?

“I played Space Park Miami on May 29th, and it was just amazing. Everyone was on fire… even the DJ!”

How have the last 18 months changed how you view your work/life balance?

“They allowed me to fully focus on producing my new album ‘Closer’, out on November 12th.”

What further steps should the industry take to combat climate change?

“Climate change is something that artists, as well as event organisers, should keep in mind for every decision — routing, venues, food and drinks, line-ups, promotion etc. Avoiding plastic bottles and straws, serve vegan food at festivals, include public transport in festival tickets. Obvious ideas, but could be a start.”

What’s the best bit of tech you’ve added to your studio or DJ setup this year?

“My golden DJ headphones, custom-made by Sennheiser.”

What’s the best album you’ve heard this year?

“Myd ‘Born A Loser’.”
