Operating a single dancefloor packing a four-corner-stack rig custom built by PK Sound, what this intimate space in Toronto lacks in terms of scale is more than made up for by attention to detail. That counts for bookings too, with DJ Mag’s Best Of British-winning DJ, Denis Sulta, Purple Disco Machine, KiNK, Seth Troxler and Maya Jane Coles listed as recent guests, while homegrown quality is also here in spades.

Just take a listen to Addy, Casualties Of Sound or Jackie Spade for evidence of why the crew formerly behind Footwork are still pushing in the right direction.

Previously operated as a live music venue, the Coda team have transformed this space into one of the hottest nightlife destinations in Canada. Featuring a four-corner stack soundsystem designed by PK Sound, and with notable bookings over the past year including Peggy Gou, Dubfire, Carl Craig and Hot Since 82, it’s no surprise Coda has earnt one of the two Highest Climber awards in this year’s poll. Clubgoers visiting the established venue are invited to experience the sounds of resident DJ Oddio or grab a drink and relax in the Coda lounge area.

The successor to Toronto’s long-running after-hours, Footwork, CODA took up residence on the corner of Bathurst & Bloor Street in 2014, converting an old rock venue called The Wreckroom into one of the city’s most popular underground spots. In just a few short years, the club has become a staple with a loyal following, featuring residents Nathan Barato, Carlo Lio and Jonathan Rosa alongside the biggest names in the techno and house business. The 550-capacity club is packed to the gills each week and a quick look at its drool-worthy line-ups explains why — in the past year, Coda has hosted everyone from Pan-Pot and Oliver Huntemann to Dennis Ferrer and Maya Jane Coles. Their 55,000 watt soundsystem ensures partiers hear every single snare too.

Just over two years since opening its doors, Coda has developed a loyal weekly following, meaning getting into the club's premiere events often isn't easy — it can be a tough Coda to crack (groan! — ed).

After outgrowing former underground hub, the now defunct Footwork Nightclub in late 2014, owners moved their operation to a former rock venue offering three times the capacity and flipped it into Toronto's alluring dance mecca, without skipping a beat.

Over the past 12 months, underground demi-lords such as Maya Jane Coles, Loco Dice, Claude VonStroke, Nicolas Jaar, Jackmaster, Black Coffee, Maceo Plex and Tale of Us have stepped into the newly designed booth with over 15,000 watts of PK sound, plus over 55,000 watts covering the rest of the club’s main room and lounge. Going out in north of the border just got far hotter thanks to this haunt’s encoding.
