RADIO 1’S ALL-WOMEN TAKEOVER

Female DJs broadcast on BBC station for 39-hours straight

BBC Radio 1 have just extended their all-female DJ line-up for International Women’s Day this weekend (March 8th).

Previously both Friday and Saturday night were to feature all-female DJs, but now the station has announced that only women will broadcast from 7pm on Friday 7th March right through until Sunday 9th March at 10am.

The station’s celebration of female DJ talent includes slots for dance music regulars Annie Mac, B. Traits (pictured), Heidi and Monki on the Friday night, with Annie Nightingale — Radio 1’s longest-serving DJ — taking the 3-5am slot that she usually does on Friday nights. Magda does the Essential Mix from 1-3am.

On Saturday 8th March — International Women’s Day itself — Annie Mac takes over Danny Howard’s Dance Anthems show, and daytime presenters Jameela Jamil (who hosts the Official Top 40 Chart show), Gemma Cairney and Adele Roberts from 1Xtra take listeners through Saturday daytime.

Then on Saturday night, female DJs from 1Xtra — Sarah Jane Crawford, Sian Anderson, Jamz Supernova, Madam X and Claira Hermet — take the station right through the night with a simultaneous broadcast on BBC 1Xtra, taking the schedule right through until 10am. Listen to Radio 1 here

The first International Women’s Days took place over 100 years ago, but it wasn’t until 1977 that the United Nations invited all member states to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace. The 2014 theme is ‘Equality For Women Is Progress For All’. More here
