buttechno will release a new EP, ‘solstice peaks’, later this week. Have an exclusive first listen to ‘trancer’ below.

Returning to his club-focused alias after a busy run of ambient and experimental releases under his given name, Berlin-based Pavel Milyakov’s debut EP Kalahari Oyster Cult offers four heads-down minimalist heaters.

Booting up in a haze of lean rhythms and acidic bass squelches, A1 ‘trancer’ is proper late nite fuel. Things get sparser still on the BPM-hopping ‘tech metal’, where a throbbing bassline threatens to override the cut’s skeletal synth work, before ‘mc2oh2’ finds the producer channelling his inner Robert Hood to move bodies round the room. B2 ‘bleeps’ switches things up again for a trippy, trance-laced crushendo, proving buttechno to be a master of rhythms at any tempo or timbre.

The EP follows up buttechno’s recent ‘lost sounds’ LP and the aptly-titled ‘Minimal Cuts’ series, and marks his debut release for Amsterdam label Kalahari Oyster Cult. Other recent releases on the imprint – which describes itself as a “journey through the night” – include Maara’s December EP, ‘Hear Me Neigh’, four-tracker ‘The Chopper’ from Convergence founder Kosh, and Blu:sh’s debut EP, ‘Felt Cute’.

‘solstice peaks’ is out 31st May on Kalahari Oyster Cult. Pre-order the EP here, and have an exclusive first listen to ‘trancer’ below.
