Destrata will release a new EP, ‘Mutationist’, later this month via Scuffed Recordings. Have an exclusive first listen to ‘Clubmoss’ below.

The Vancouver-based DJ and producer continues his streak of rave-ready releases – which includes tracks for SPE:C, Of Paradise, and Intercept – with three cuts of hypertextural club music on Ian DPM and Wager’s imprint. Landing later this week, ‘Mutationist’ finds Destrata continuing to carve out his niche in the leftfield bass and techno spheres, as he slaloms through aerobic basslines and ominous, droning synths.

The title track is the project’s most tactile, with convulsive subs and a tough percussive core. There’s even less breathing room on ‘Clubmoss’, which channels the more techno-adjacent modes of Destrata’s 2022 ‘Tributaries’ EP, with the addition of a chilling, cybernated vocal sample.

As the project approaches splintering point, closer ‘Desire Signal’ winds back the BPM for a shuffling techno-dancehall hybrid. Here, lurching bass and whipcrack snares are the order of the day, as the producer proves he can wreak havoc at just about any pace.

‘Mutationist’ is the latest EP on London’s Scuffed Recordings, and follows releases from artists including Sister Zo, Farsight, Danny Goliger, and Tamlin. Read an interview with label bosses, Ian DPM and Wager, and listen to a mix of tracks from its catalogue, for DJ Mag’s Sound Of series here.

‘Mutationist’ is out this Friday 20th October via Scuffed Recordings. Pre-order the EP here, and listen exclusively to ‘Clubmoss’ below.
