New Delhi’s FILM crafts cinematic club music on his debut album for Qilla Records

Premiere: FILM ‘I’ve Always Liked Trance’

New Delhi-based DJ and producer FILM will release his self-titled debut album via Qilla Records this month. Listen to ‘I’ve Always Liked Trance’ below.

Inspired by hip-hop and pop production techniques, the Medium Rare party-starter sculpts 13 cuts of hi-def electronic music. With a view to writing songs that tell a story, rather than tracks that serve the club, he makes use of detailed sound design and creative sampling to build an album that feels thematically rich, while still packing a hefty punch

FILM is known for his genre-hopping DJ sets, where leftfield techno, jungle, hip-hop and Warpy rhythm science converge. These are all present on his debut LP, and then some: Acid stepper ‘Discordia’ samples opposition members in the Indian Parliament berating the Home Minister; dubwise chugger ‘Formless’ samples an eerie video game speech; ‘Drill Masala’ puts a wavey, cosmic spin on the globetrotting sound; ‘DBRK’ dunks a breakbeat hardcore rhythm into PHAT Korg Arp Odyssey bass; PLPFCTN samples dialogue from Pulp Fiction.

In the album’s closing track, a tribute to his late mother, FILM samples an interview with Matrix star Keanu Reeves. In a break from the track’s Boards Of Canada-like beat and muffled ambience, the actor responds to the question: “What do you think happens when we die?”. “I know that the ones who love us will miss us,” he replies simply as the song ends.

‘I’ve Always Liked Trance’ is, as its title might suggest, one of the album’s more energetic cuts, blending a thumping techno beat with rattling tablas and euphoric synths. Check it out below.

‘FILM’ will be released on 28th May. Pre-order it here
