Amapiano star Oupa John Sefoka aka DJ Sumbody has died following an alleged shooting in Johannesburg.

Sefoka's production company, Sumsounds Music, confirmed he was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning (20th November) in a statement on social media.

"Artist and musician DJ Sumbody has died," reads the statement. "Details of his untimely death cannot be released but the artist named Oupa John Sekofa allegedly ran into an unfortunate incident that led to his passing in the early hours of Sunday morning."

The South African Police Service (SAPS) have appealed to the public in "searching for suspects following a shooting in Woodmead where two people died, and one was seriously injured".  According to South Africa's news24, Sefoka and his bodyguard were the victims of this shooting, and were pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

The Pretoria-born artist first made a name for himself as presenter of the radio show Mashaedi on the Engage on Tshwane FM 93.6 before turning his focus to production in 2017. He found success with a string of singles, including 2018's 'Monate Mpolaye', and released his debut album, 'Ashi Nthwela' the following year. He scored a hit track last year with 'Iyamemeza'.

Black Coffee, DJ Sbu, and Major League DJz, are among the artists who have paid tribute to DJ Sumbody on social media.
