Bandcamp to continue its fee-free Fridays for the rest of 2020

The initiative launched back in March

Bandcamp has announced plans to continue fee-free Fridays for the rest of 2020.

In March this year, Bandcamp waived its revenue share for all sales made in a 24-hour period, between midnight and midnight PST, in support of artists using the platform. Artists earned $4.3 Million on the first fee-free Friday, with almost 800,000 items sold through the platform.

According to Bandcamp, sales were more than 15 times the norm for a Friday, with peak demand seeing a staggering 11 items bought per second. Imprints such as Hyperdub also announced they would not be taking any cut from revenue, so 100% of cash would go directly to artists in those instances. Across the four fee-free Friday's that have taken place, fans paid out more than $20 million directly to artists.

Now, the platform has announced that the fee-free Fridays will continue throughout the rest of this year, as a way of supporting artists and labels impacted by COVID-19. In a blog post, Bandcamp said that the initiative is "a good reminder that Bandcamp Fridays are really an extension of what Bandcamp is about every day."
