DJ apologises for playing Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ at football game, ruining “Whamageddon”

The Northampton Town Football Club stadium DJ has apologised for playing Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ at a recent match, causing more than 7,000 fans to "lose" "Whamageddon".

Matt Facer, aka DJ Matty, was hit with backlash when he played the 1984 seasonal classic at the 2nd December Northampton Town match against Portsmouth FC at Sixfields stadium, BBC reports. The 7,215 people subsequently lost the cult game, which revolves around avoiding hearing 'Last Christmas' for as long as possible in December.

"I never knew people took it so seriously," Facer told BBC Radio Northampton. The game, fuelled by social media, is about a decade old and now has an official website and list of rules.

"I gave it a spin, thinking it would be quite funny to wipe out 7,000 people who couldn't avoid it, but clearly it isn't funny," Facer said. "I had a bit of an insult on Twitter, light-hearted, [saying] it was not a nice thing to do, and apparently that was quite tame to what was being said in the stadium. So I officially apologise to everybody whose Christmas I've ruined."

Facer said he's going to reluctantly skip the Christmas hit at future football matches. "I can take on the chin with my home fans and Portsmouth, but I don't think I'll be playing it again", he said. "I think it's a shame people in professions like mine can't play Wham! until [late] December, but it's a game and we all have to jump on board."

Earlier this year, Dublin's Bohemian FC made their home of Dalymount Park the first-ever "vinyl-only" football stadium.
