DJ Mag: diversity & equality report Q4 2022

Our quarterly update, addressing how we can tackle racism and diversity issues within the electronic music industry as a publication

This quarterly update reports on the key D&I activity during Q4 2022, including our successes and areas for improvement. We committed to quarterly reports in our 2020 company pledge.

In addition to the detail in this report, we continue to use our media platforms, covering print, web, video and broadcast to champion artists from a diverse range of backgrounds and identities.

Community support

In Q4 we announced the recipient of the DJ Mag x AZ Mag creative fund, as Jae Tallawah AKA TU3SDAY. As a disabled producer and DJ, Jae’s music is "made by, for and with people who live at similar intersections" as them. As part of the AZ Mag Creative Fund they will be creating their second EP, with a focus on using hardware and AI to make the process accessible to them. The project will "prioritise working with neuro minorities and re-imagining their existing music to bring it to reach the expansive audiences that exist in the world of electronic music".

You can follow TU3SDAY's journey here, and check out their music here. Read more about TU3SDAY in October’s Emerging Artists feature. You can read about the other recipients of AZ Mag's 2022 Creative Fund via their website. We will be announcing further community support activations and projects as they are confirmed in 2023.

Business practices

Our Q3 2022 Diversity & Inclusion report was published across our digital channels in October 2022. We continue to meet on a regular basis to hold ourselves accountable to the pledges we made.

Throughout the whole of 2022 we continued to encourage our network of international DJ Mag licensees to follow our lead in adopting initiatives that promote diversity and inclusivity. We look to further cement this throughout our 2023 activities.

Our commitment to provide free print and digital advertising to causes that support Black and non-Black POC community projects currently sits to the value of over £200,000. This commitment to free advertising is an ongoing part of the business, including our digital campaigns. Please contact [email protected] for further details.

Editorial

Our Best of British nominations recognise and celebrate a wide range of artists from a diverse range of communities. The results and the winners can be found here. Throughout 2023 we will continue to integrate the pledge into the planning and rollout of our editorial activations, ensuring current and future partnerships are in line with the values laid out within it.

We are also currently in the process of implementing a more consistent use of alt text on all images attached in our online news, long-form features and on our social channels.

Live events

We threw several live events in Q4 2022. Two DJ Mag Presents shows, and our Best of British Awards show working alongside Youth Music as part of our ongoing partnership, which took place at London’s Steel Yard on the 15th December.
