Everything But The Girl announce new album, ‘Fuse’, share single and video: Watch

Everything But The Girl have announced the details of their forthcoming new album, ‘Fuse’, which will be released via Buzzin’ Fly Records on 21st April. Watch the video for the first single, ‘Nothing Left To Lose’, below.

Having teased their imminent return toward the end of 2022, ‘Fuse’ marks Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn’s first album together in 24 years, and was written over the spring-summer of 2021. The video for ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ is directed by Charlie Di Placido, who has previously worked with acts including Kojey Radical and Jungle.

The 10-track album was recorded in secret at home and in a small studio outside Bath with engineer Bruno Ellingham. Some tracks on the release, such as ‘When You Mess Up’ and ‘Interior Space’, were developed from ambient sound montages and piano loops that Watt had recorded into his iPhone. Other tracks, such as ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ and ‘Caution To The Wind’, wield a dancefloor-focused pulse, with Thorn’s emotive songwriting and distinctive vocals remaining front and centre.

Speaking about their return to studio collaboration, Thorn said: “Ironically the finished sound of the new album was the last thing on our mind when we started in March 2021. Of course, we were aware of the pressures of such a long-awaited comeback, so we tried to begin instead in a spirit of open-minded playfulness, uncertain of the direction, receptive to invention”.

Expanding on the creative process behind the album, Watt said : “It was exciting. A natural dynamism developed. We spoke in short-hand, and little looks, and co-wrote instinctively. It became more than the sum of our two selves. It just became Everything But The Girl on its own.”

“After so much time apart professionally, there was both a friction and a natural spark in the studio when we began,” Thorn added. “However much we underplayed it at the start, it was like a fuse had been lit. And it ended in a kind of coalescence, an emotional fusion. It felt very real and alive.”

Formed in in 1982, Everything But The Girl had top 10 UK chart success with their hit song 'Missing' in 1995, which was remixed into a cult dance classic by Todd Terry. The duo were also nominated for MTV, EMA and Ivor Novello Awards, and released their last studio album to date, 'Temperamental', in 1999.
